The Ingredients We Don't Use

We believe that transparency is key. That’s why we've made a pledge to exclude over 9,000 toxic ingredients from our products, ensuring that our formulations are truly clean and safe for you and your family. Here are just a few examples of ingredients we never use:

Ammonia + Ethanolamine

Ethanolamine, commonly found in cosmetics, serve as emulsifiers, foaming agents, and components in hair color products. They are often labeled as MEA, DEA, & TEA (monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, and triethanolamine). These ingredients can be abrasive to the skin, leading to irritation and potential health risks.

PPD (Para-phenylenediamine)

PPD (para-phenylenediamine) is a chemical commonly found in many hair dyes and is known to cause allergic reactions and potential skin and respiratory issues. It is a potent allergen that can cause severe contact dermatitis, facial swelling, and lifelong scalp sensitivity in sensitized individuals.

EDTA

EDTA is a chelating agent commonly found in personal care products to prevent discoloration and improve stability. However, it can be harmful to the environment and aquatic life and may cause skin irritation in some individuals.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used in conventional permanent hair color to lighten the hair and develop color. This oxidation process can weaken the hair fiber over time, contributing to dryness, increased porosity, and breakage.

Heavy Metals + Metallic Salts

Heavy metals, such as lead, are toxic substances that can be harmful when absorbed by the body. Metallic salts are ingredients historically used in some hair color products that can accumulate on the hair shaft, interfere with future chemical treatments, and contribute to unpredictable color results and hair damage.

Synthetic Fragrance

Synthetic fragrances can be harsh on the skin, often leading to irritation and allergic reactions. Many contain harmful chemicals that not only impact your health but also pose risks to the environment.

Sulfates

Sulfates are cleansing agents commonly found in shampoos that can strip away natural oils and accelerate color fading. They may also contribute to dryness and irritation, particularly for sensitive scalps or color-treated hair.

Parabens + Silicones

Parabens are preservatives used to extend product shelf life. While approved for use in cosmetics at regulated levels, some consumers choose to avoid them due to concerns about long-term exposure. Silicones are conditioning ingredients that coat the hair to provide temporary smoothness and shine. Over time, some silicones can build up on the hair, weighing it down, reducing moisture penetration, and making it more difficult for conditioning treatments to reach the hair shaft.
