Paraphenylenediamine, more commonly known as PPD, is a chemical substance that is widely used as a permanent hair dye. It may also been found in textile or fur dyes, dark colored cosmetics, photographic developer and lithography plates, photocopying and printing inks, black rubber, oils, greases and gasoline. The use of PPD as a hair dye is popular because it is a permanent dye that gives a natural look. Hair can also be shampooed without becoming de-colored and perming to achieve waves or curls can be done without difficulty. PPD hair dyes usually come packaged as 2 bottles, one containing the PPD dye preparation and the other containing the developer or oxidizer.
The problem with using these colors is they can cause severe allergic reactions. Some of these reactions include (but are not exclusive to) swelling of the skin, hives, and eczema. That is why it is so important for Surya Brasil to continue to put out Healthy PPD-free hair colors. We want to give you a color you desire without the harsh side effects. We do still recommend a patch test to be sure you are not allergic to one of the natural ingredients included. You can read more about PPD's here
