Just returned from a whirlwind tour of the Natural & Organic Products Europe Expo in London. We had a wonderful time meeting new associates, partners and future retailers with Catherine Mulcahy of YourTonic.com

The spotlight was on our Henna Creams and Powders. Retailers in the UK and Ireland are incredibly pleased to discover our PPD-Free high performance healthy hair color.

PPD has been in the news way too often in Europe. There has been an increase in allergic reactions and even deaths from salon and at-home chemical hair color.

PPD-Free Healthy Hair Color from Surya Brasil

As the world’s population ages (2 billion people will be aged 60 and older by 2050 according to the World Health Organization) so will their hair turn grey. In an effort to turn back the clock many are turning to inexpensive store bought chemical color to cover their grey (including men who have seen a 25% increase in the use of hair dye in recent years). This usage has increased the the number of allergic reactions to a lethal chemical in hair color. These allergies are not limited to the aging; women and men of all stages and lifestyles are coloring their hair to represent their own unique personal look.

The Chemical Cause

While the allergy causing ingredient “PPD" is present in about two thirds to 99% of all hair dyes, you will NEVER find it in Surya Brasil’s Award-Winning, Healthy, High-Performance Henna Creams and Powders.

PPD’s, or p-phenylenediamine are color pigments used predominantly in chemical hair color and are in higher concentrations when used in darker shades. PPD can also be found in textiles and fur dyes, dark colored cosmetics, temporary tattoos, photographic developer and lithography plates, photocopying and printing inks, black rubber, oils, greases and gasoline.

Signs and Symptoms of A PPD Allergic Reaction

Sufferers of a PPD allergy will experience redness, itchy or swollen skin around the eyelids, ears, hair line, beard or neck. A person who develops a sensitivity to PPD may not experience symptoms until at least 10 days after her first usage. Subsequent exposures can produce a reaction in 6 to 72 hours.

Some PPD sufferers will experience what is know as “urticaria” and symptoms of this condition, also known as hives, can include red skin, eyelid swelling, red patches on the body, wheezing, sneezing, difficulty swallowing and vomiting. Symptoms can be seen about an hour after exposure to hair dye. Urticaria occurs when PPD triggers a series of chemical reactions that leads to the leaking of blood plasma into the skin

A Healthy Hair Color with 100% Grey Coverage

Surya Brasil’s Henna Creams and Powders are the best alternative hair color for those who suffer from PPD allergies. They do not contain ammonia, PPD, parabens, propylene glycol, peroxide, resorcinol, metallic salts, artificial fragrance, mineral oils or GMO’s. The creams are formulated with a very small percentage of mild, non-skin sensitizing color, which are considering safe by Skin Deep (Environmental Working Group) standards. Surya Brasil Henna hair colors are also hypoallergenic and dermatologically tested.

While it is amazing that such common products as chemical hair color contain potentially lethal chemicals, Surya Brasil is on a mission to change the way personal hair and skin products are created. All of the products created by Surya Brasil are natural, organic and cruelty-free.

Surya Brasil recommends a skin patch test for first time users. The test involves applying a small sized spot of cream or powder mixed with water to either the neck (behind the ear) or the inner bend of the elbow. Allow it to dry and leave uncovered for 48-72 hours. If no irritation or rash occurs during this time then the test is negative and one can assume that the risk of developing a rash will be much less when the color is applied to the whole head.
